Description
Kota, Gabon Reliquary figure, wood, copper H. 46 cm – W. 21 cm. Provenance: former collection, Strasbourg, France, acquired in the 1980s, passed down through the family. These sculptures, placed atop the wicker baskets containing the relics, were intended to watch over the ancestors’ bones. During major (bwett, mbulu-ngulu or mboy) in which only initiates took part, the guardians and the reliquaries were brought out into the open so that the ancestors could participate, even after death, in the important decisions that the clan members were called upon to make.
