Description
Kaka, Cameroon,
Attributed to a rare artist, wood, patina, weathered
H. 62 cm - W. 17 cm.
Among the Kaka people living in western Cameroon in the Mbem region, south of the Mambila, the creation of these works is linked to the veneration of ancestors. Harter (1994: 47). "Ancestor worship appears to hold a central place for them. It is overseen by the wantop, one of the members of the chief’s council, as part of the rituals of the male secret society known as the mbir." The crusty patina on the present figure indicates a long period of ritual use.
