Description
Luba, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Wooden staff
H. 80 cm – W. 18 cm (on a plinth).
Kibango ceremonial staffs were the principal symbols of authority for Luba dignitaries. Belonging to diviners, nobles and territorial chiefs, they served as repositories of the histories, genealogies and migrations of a specific family, lineage or chiefdom. As the Luba considered women to be best suited to preserving the secrets of power, they are the principal iconographic theme, as seen here.
