Description
Shona, Zimbabwe
Neck rest, wood
H. 17 cm – W. 19 cm
This neck rest perfectly encapsulates the two distinct stylistic trends that characterise the artistic output of these regions of southern Africa: the first is geometric, the other figurative – though without aiming for a literal representation of human or animal figures. The object features both typical geometric decorations and a face delicately carved in the round; their bold combination lends the object its balance and testifies to the sculptor’s great skill and refinement. The clarity of the geometry is striking, both in the circular and linear motifs, carved in relief. The circles lend softness to the composition, tempering the rigidity of the intersecting lines, which recall the striations on gazelle horns. These concentric designs were often an evocation of female fertility. Finally, it stands out from other examples in his body of work due to the light, vibrant colour of its patina.
