Description
Kota, Gabon
Emboli helmet mask, wood, pigment
H. 76 cm – W. 28 cm
Among the Kota people, Emboli masks were kept in secret in forest shelters some distance from the villages. Evoking a very powerful spirit of the forest, the gorilla, they were used during satsi initiation ceremonies for young men, particularly during circumcision rites. It is also said that on certain occasions, they were tasked with combating witchcraft.
