Description
Mambila, Cameroon,
Suaga zoomorphic helmet mask, wood, pigment
H. 20 cm – W. 51 cm (on a plinth).
The Suaga mask has zoomorphic features that are difficult to associate with any specific animal. Whilst the gaping mouth lined with sharp teeth is reminiscent of a dog, the head features two long, curved horns. Viewed in profile, it displays a broad convex curve extending from the forehead to the tip of the snout.
