Description
CAMBODIA, KHMER ART, LOBPURI REGION, 12th–13th century
A sandstone sculpture of a seated Buddha, depicted sitting in the virasana posture on a quadrangular base, with a serene expression. The head is crowned with a tiered conical diadem surmounted by the ushnisha. The hands are joined in front of the chest, holding a ritual conch shell. The figure is supported by a substantial spigot designed for insertion into an architectural plinth, the whole resting on a suitable display base.
