Description
Avalokitejvara has four arms and a gentle, smiling face full of expression; he is seated in the virasana posture, leaning against a multi-lobed mandorla. Two of his arms rest on his knees, whilst the other two are raised towards the sky, holding the rosary in his right hand and the conch for lustral water in his left. His head is crowned with a tall tiara decorated with the image of the Buddha. His long ears are adorned with jewels. Slightly eroded beige sandstone sculpture. Khmer art from the Bayon period – 13th century. Height: 46.5 cm Provenance: private collection. Sale of 24 October 1993 at the Auxerre Auction House, lot number 185
