Description
CAMBODIA, Khmer period, Bayon culture, 13th century A large sandstone sculpture depicting the goddess Prajnaparamita. The deity is shown standing in the samabhanga posture on a square plinth; both forearms are now missing. The face, imbued with serenity, is rendered in the traditional style of the Bayon period: an elongated mouth with thick lips, a broad nose, eyes suggested by half-closed slits, and a barely defined brow ridge. The face is framed by a finely worked hairstyle, with individual strands carved in incised waves, and topped by a small ushnisha. The elongated ears are adorned with pendants. The torso, bare and simply modelled, is clad in a sarong decorated with floral motifs and held in place by a belt, one end of which falls diagonally across the front. Height: 67.2 cm Provenance: private collection assembled in the 1990s. Sale of 12 November 1995 at the Auxerre Auction House, lot number 196
