CAMBODIA, Khmer period, Bayon culture, 13th century
Buddha head in sandstone. The deity is depicted in a meditative pose, with a serene expression; the face displays features characteristic of the Bayon aesthetic. The face, with full, serene features, has an elongated mouth with thick lips, a broad nose and half-closed eyes; the headdress is rendered in relief and surmounted by a prominent ushnisha. The piece rests on a suitable display plinth.
