Description
BURMA, Kingdom of Pagan, 12th century
A Buddha head carved from sandstone, with a serene, oval-shaped face and fine, slightly stylised features characteristic of the Pagan aesthetic. The half-closed eyes, suggested by discreet slits, are surmounted by a finely drawn continuous eyebrow arch; the flat nose and wide mouth, hinting at a smile, combine to create an expression of meditative serenity. The hair, rendered in a simple style, is accompanied by ears with long, pendulous lobes. The work bears traces of former polychromy and rests on a suitable display base.
Height: 18 cm
Provenance: private collection assembled in the 1990s.
