Description
BURMA, Kingdom of Mandalay, early 19th century.
Bronze sculpture with a gilded patina, depicting the Buddha Maravijaya seated in the lotus position on a pedestal, his hands in the gesture of taking the earth as witness, one at the front of the torso turned towards the sky, the other resting on the pedestal. The face has a serene expression, the half-closed eyes rendered in polychrome to lend a realistic appearance to the sculpture; the head is styled in fine curls and adorned with a diadem decorated with polychrome glass beads, the whole surmounted by the ushnisha. He is dressed in a monastic robe whose thick folds cascade down.
Height: 55 cm
Provenance: private collection assembled in the 1990s.
