Description
BURMA, Kingdom of Mandalay, early 19th century
A significant Buddha sculpture in lacquered and gilded silver-plated bronze. The deity
is depicted seated in vajrasana on a pedestal, hands in bhumisparsa mudra, one turned towards the sky and the other resting on the front of the pedestal, in a gesture of calling the earth to witness. The face, with full, harmonious features, has a mouth forming a slight smile, the eyes half-closed in an expression of deep contemplation. She is dressed in a golden monastic robe falling in folds over the bust and the front of the base. The surface retains a beautiful polychrome finish of gilded lacquer, contrasting with the silver-plated bronze sections left exposed on the Buddha’s skin. The hairstyle, composed of very fine, regular curls, is crowned by the ushnisha.
Height: 76 cm
Provenance: private collection assembled in the 1990s.
Sale of 24 October 1993 at the Auxerre Auction House, lot number 303
