Description
BURMA, Kingdom of Mandalay, early 19th century A rare and significant bronze sculpture depicting the Buddha Maravijaya. The deity is shown seated in the vajrasana posture on a pedestal, his hands in the bhumisparsa mudra, one turned towards the sky, the other resting on the pedestal, in a gesture of calling the earth to witness. The face, with its full and perfectly balanced features, is animated by a gentle smile, the eyes half-closed in an expression of profound inner contemplation, characteristic of the Burmese aesthetic of the Mandalay period. The hair is rendered in very fine curls surmounted by the ushnisha. She is dressed in a monastic robe whose undulating folds, finely chiselled, flow elegantly on either side of the figure. The central part of the base features an engraved cartouche in the centre, bearing a dedicatory inscription. Height: 93.1 cm (Some wear and old fixing holes) Provenance: private collection assembled in the 1990s. Sale of 12 April 1992 at the Auxerre Auction House, lot number 171
