BURMA, Kingdom of Mandalay, early 19th century.
A large wooden sculpture, formerly gilded, depicting the Buddha seated in vajrasana on a tall base shaped like a stylised double lotus flower, his hands in bhumisparsa mudra, one turned towards the sky and the other resting on the base, in a gesture of calling the earth to witness. The face has rounded features in a meditative pose, with thin lips in a smiling expression, half-closed eyes, and a head with smooth hair topped by a bulbous ushnisha.
