Description
BURMA, 19th century
A carved and polychrome teak wood sculpture depicting Prince Gautama, seated in the lalitasana posture on a cylindrical base. The figure is depicted at the moment of his renunciation, holding in both hands a blade with which he cuts off his long plait. The face, with its fine features and slight smile, is framed by large, elongated ears; he is dressed in a princely costume enhanced with green, red and gold polychrome. The base bears inscriptions that are partially effaced.
