Description
CHINA
QING DYNASTY, 18th-19th CENTURY
Baoyueping" porcelain flask decorated in blue underglaze on a pale yellow ground. The circular body is surmounted by a tubular neck flanked by curved handles. In the centre is a medallion in relief surrounded by Ming-style floral foliage framed by a frieze of Greek foliage.
H. 20 cm
Note:
The name "Baoyueping" (literally "bottle embracing the moon") refers to the shape of the body, which is reminiscent of the lunar star. This type of flask imitates pieces from the early Ming dynasty, more specifically from the Yongle period (1403 - 1425), which were themselves inspired by Middle Eastern goldsmiths' models.
