Instructions for use:
This piece belongs to a series of armorial dishes commissioned for the Dutch market at the end of the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1661-1722) and the beginning of that of the Yongzheng emperor (1722-1735), comprising 21 models bearing the coats of arms of Dutch and Flemish cities, provinces and regions as well as the arms of France and England. Their decoration is divided into three distinct groups, the first two combining underglaze blue and enamels of the green family, while the third group uses the first pink enamels developed in Jingdezhen in the 1720s.
They were probably commissioned privately, as the VOC had stopped commissioning Oriental porcelain in the 1690s, only resuming trade in it around 1729, directly from the port of Canton. During this period, private orders flowed into Batavia (now Jakarta), the capital of the Dutch East Indies, via the ships of the other European East India companies. Christiaan J.A. Jörg takes a closer look at this subject in Famille Verte - Chinese Porcelain in Green Enamels, Groninger Museum, 2011, pp. 163-169.
