Description
CHINA MING DYNASTY, WANLI PERIOD, DATE 1577 Two Fahua-glazed stoneware luohan statues, seated on rocky bases, dressed in long monastic robes enamelled in turquoise blue and aubergine violet, enhanced with yellow enamel details. One is elderly, with a wrinkled face and serene expression, holding his hands to his upper torso. The other, with a youthful face, his hands in anjali mudra. The reverse of the bases with an incised inscription, dated 5th year of the reign of Emperor Wanli of the Ming dynasty (1577), one with the cyclical date "Dingchou" (1577). H. 45 cm and 45 cm A very similar piece, also dated to the 5th year of the reign of Emperor Wanli of the Ming dynasty sold by Christie's, London, sale "Chinese Ceramics, Works of Art and Textiles" on 12 May 2017, lot 293. Another very similar piece, also dated 1577, is in the collections of the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle (no. 73.6).
