Commentary:
The iconography of the Udayana Buddha ('zhantanfo' in Chinese, literally meaning 'sandalwood Buddha') is inspired by a large sandalwood statue commissioned by King Udayana of Vatsa in India, a lay disciple of the Buddha who was the first to have an image of Shakyamuni carved during his lifetime. This classic image was widely copied, particularly in China, Japan and Korea, spreading this iconographic model throughout the Far East.
