Note:
Traditional Tibetan medicine (also known as "Sowa-Rigpa") dates back nearly 2,500 years and was codified in the eighth century in the "Four Medical Tantras" of Yutok Yonten Gonpo. It is based on a synthesis of Indian, Ayurvedic, Persian, Greek, Bön and Chinese knowledge and is linked to the Buddhist tradition according to which all illness is ultimately the result of "three poisons" of the mind: excessive desire, hatred and ignorance. It emphasises the need to maintain a balance between three elements: "rLüng" (wind), "mKhris pa" (bile) and "bad-kan" (phlegm).
