Coromandel lacquer, consisting of twelve leaves
Decorated on both sides with finely engraved scenes of interiors and the outskirts of pavilions surrounded by tree-lined gardens, depicting young Chinese beauties engaged in various activities. The rim is decorated with fantastic animals, furniture and flowers. The reverse features motifs of dragons chasing the sacred pearl and phoenixes framing calligraphy written by Zeng Shimian (originally from Quanzhou in Fujian), mayor of Shaanxi, who passed the imperial examination, celebrating
the 70th birthday of a senior official.
