Description
* JAPAN, Meiji period (1868–1912) A significant group in patinated and partially gilded bronze depicting an armoured elephant supporting a pagoda. The elephant is depicted standing on a rocky terrace, its trunk raised, richly adorned with decorative motifs in relief and bearing an imposing howdah-style canopy surmounted by a tall, tiered pagoda with curved roofs. The architecture is finely openwork and animated by figures and suspended bells, with the upper section featuring a large dragon whose body is rendered in high relief. Resting on a black-lacquered quadrangular plinth. 148 x 70 x 38 cm (A few minor chips on the plinth).
