A small Satsuma earthenware incense burner, with a globular body resting on three feet, decorated with polychrome enamels and gold highlights depicting bamboo, chrysanthemums and a phoenix in flight above paulownia trees, against a background of so-called ‘shippo’ motifs, the lid shaped like a chrysanthemum flower with openwork petals, the handle repeating this motif, and Greek fret friezes around the rim.
A mark “夀右” accompanied by a Shimazu crest in blue, known as “gosu”.
