Description
* VIETNAM, 19th century A pair of ceremonial ‘kiem’-style sabres with straight blades; the hilts are made from fossilised mammoth molar, finely polished, displaying beautiful natural veining in shades of ivory and honey brown. The pommels, guards and mountings are crafted from chiselled and repoussé silver, adorned with stylised dragons winding their way through foliage and floral motifs, in a rich, imperially inspired design. The flat-bladed swords are housed in lacquered exotic wood scabbards, decorated on both sides with mother-of-pearl inlays depicting flowering branches, birds and plant motifs, reflecting the refined craftsmanship characteristic of Far Eastern workshops. The scabbard fittings, also in chiselled silver, feature a harmonious design of dragons and stylised characters. L. 102 cm (Signs of wear, distortions, minor losses to the inlays).
