Description
A pair of Japanese copper guardian statues (Kongōrikishi) The statues known as Nio (Kongōrikishi). Crafted in a powerful, muscular style, they are intended to ward off evil and protect the Dharma (Buddhist teachings). The figure with its mouth open symbolises the beginning of creation (“A”), whilst the one with its mouth closed marks the end (“Un”). 19th century. H: 20–21 cm. Good condition.
