QING DYNASTY, LATE 19TH CENTURY
A pair of large, lidded incense burners in gilded bronze and cloisonné enamel, in the shape of a double rhombus, resting on four feet modelled on the forms of children. The body is decorated with a variety of flowers set against a latticework of sapek patterns. The whole is surmounted by a frieze alternating between lotus scrolls and the Eight Buddhist Emblems, as well as a frieze of medallions depicting cranes amidst the clouds. The lids are surmounted by floating knots, extending to form handles. Each has a natural wood base in the shape of a double-rhombus, carved with two bats encircling a stylised ‘Shou’ character.
