Description
CAMBODIA, Khmer period, Bayon period, 13th century A large carved sandstone stele depicting a Deva-Rishi. The sage is shown standing beneath a mandorla decorated with stylised foliage. The figure is depicted in a frontal pose, hands joined in anjali mudra, a gesture of devotion, and holding a lock of his long beard. His face bears a serene expression, with half-closed eyes and a faint smile on his lips. Height: 74 cm In the Brahmanic tradition, the rishis are inspired sages, regarded as the mythical authors of the hymns of the Rig-Veda and other Vedic texts. Their depiction in Khmer art bears witness to the permanence and integration of Hindu traditions within the religious landscape of Angkor. The Cham stylistic influence is evident in the treatment of form and decoration, reflecting the regional artistic exchanges characteristic of this period. Provenance: private collection. Sale of 9 May 1993 at the Auxerre Auction House, lot number 64
