Description
LAOS, 18th century
An important bronze sculpture with a brown patina, depicting the Buddha Maravijaya. The deity is shown seated in virasana on a base adorned with a frieze of stylised flames, his hands in bhumisparsa mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness. The face, with its delicate and harmonious features, is animated by a gentle, youthful smile, the half-closed eyes conveying a profound sense of inner peace. The left hand, resting in meditation, bears in the palm a representation of the wheel of the law (dharmachakra), a symbol of Buddhist teaching. The head, whose hairstyle is rendered in fine spiral spikes, is crowned by an ushnisha extended by a tall stylised flame. She is dressed in a simple monastic robe.
Height: 77.7 cm
Provenance: private collection assembled in the 1990s.
