John MORTIMER & John Samuel HUNT A significant silver (925) table centrepiece depicting a group of stags at the foot of a vine stock, topped with a removable section designed to hold a goblet. Tripod base decorated with acanthus leaves, scrolls and medallions monogrammed ‘H’. Signed ‘MORTIMER’ on the base and numbered 6959. London, c. 1840 Hallmark: Rampant lion, leopard’s head; Silversmith: IHS H. 62 cm Weight: 8.352 gr Upper section missing; minor damage This piece is comparable to a table centrepiece from the same workshop, featuring a similar ornamental repertoire as well as a removable upper section, analogous to our own, allowing the piece to be transformed into a candelabrum (missing from our piece).
