LOMONOSOV – Imperial Porcelain Manufactory of Saint Petersburg
Porcelain tea service with a grand feu decoration featuring a cobalt blue lattice pattern and gold highlights. It comprises:
- 6 cups and saucers
- 1 teapot
- 1 milk jug
- 1 sugar bowl
- 1 bowl on a pedestal
Marked on the underside and ‘MADE IN RUSSIA’
There are two stories explaining the origin of this design. According to the official version, the motif is said to be based on that of Empress Elizabeth I’s service, from the time when the porcelain manufactory was founded. The other version suggests that the design is reminiscent of the windows taped up in a cross pattern during the Siege of Leningrad. The artist, Anna Iatskevitch, survived this siege, during which she lost her mother and sister: this design was therefore a way of paying tribute to them. This famous ‘cobalt lattice’ ultimately earned the artist a gold medal at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair.
