ENGLAND. Commemorative silver platter engraved with the inscription “Presented to W. HORSFIELD Esq., Director of the Survey and Town Planning Service, by members of his staff and colleagues on his retirement from the Colonial Service. Dar es Salaam. March 1952”. Resting on four eagle’s-claw feet. Birmingham hallmark, letter ‘Y’ for 1948. Maker’s mark “B.B. SLD”. Diameter: 25.5 cm. Weight: 685 g. Minimal wear. Provenance: Estate of Mr William Johnson Horsfield. Included are his leather briefcase bearing his initials, four albums of rare photographs he took whilst staying in Tanzania (scenes of daily life) and personal documents. Biography: Mr William Johnson Horsfield was a British surveyor, topographer and civil servant during the colonial era who worked in Dar es Salaam, then the capital of the territory of Tanganyika (now Tanzania). He joined the colonial administration in Tanganyika in the early 1920s. He rose through the ranks to become Chief Surveyor of the Lands and Mines Division in Dar es Salaam, before being appointed Director of Surveys and Town Planning in early 1950. (Online source)
