Jacques Laffitte (1767–1744), of humble origins, entered the banking world towards the end of the reign of Louis XVI. He enjoyed a meteoric rise, eventually reaching the position of Governor of the Banque de France. He amassed a considerable personal fortune, though this was marred towards the end of his career by a number of financial setbacks. He was forced to sell off some of his possessions, but retained the prestigious set of chairs presented here, which stood in the grand drawing room overlooking the garden of his Parisian mansion, the Hôtel Laffitte. For a set of four similar chairs by JACOB D RUE MESLEE from the Tuileries, see: Piasa auction – Paris, 22 October 2008, lot 197. For a pair of chairs by Jacob Desmalter from Compiègne, also marked ‘Durozeau’, see: Daguerre auction – Paris, 25 April 2025, lot 230.
