Description
Ceremonial or beadle’s staff made from whalebone, with a silver-coloured metal fitting decorated with a palmette. Height: 103.5 cm. Signs of wear. Flaubert referred to this staff as a ‘whale bone slat’ in his novel *Madame Bovary*: “And, seated in a choir stall, side by side, they watched the three cantors pass before them and pass by again and again as they chanted. The organ blared at full volume. Mr Bournisien, in full regalia, sang in a high-pitched voice; he would bow towards the tabernacle, raise his hands, and stretch out his arms. Lestiboudois moved about the church with his whale bone rod; near the lectern, the bier rested between four rows of candles. Charles felt like standing up to blow them out.” (III, 10) (Source: https://www.languefrancaise.net/)
