Icon depicting four ‘Mother of God’ figures in two tiers surrounding the Crucifixion. Tempera on wood. Russia, 19th century. 31 x 26.5 cm.
The first is the icon of the Mother of God, Softener of Wicked Hearts, to whom one prays for the softening of the heart and for the alleviation of physical and mental suffering. This image of the Mother of God interceded between warring factions. There is little historical evidence concerning this icon, but it probably originates from south-western Russia. The Mother of God is depicted with her heart pierced by six swords, with a central sword pointing downwards. The number seven, which generally signifies fullness, here emphasises the immensity of Mary’s heart during her earthly life.
The second icon is entitled ‘Ease My Sorrow’ and was brought to Moscow by the Cossacks in 1640. It is widely venerated following a miracle that took place in 1760. The image expresses Mary’s profound suffering on Golgotha, as her only Son dies unjustly on the cross. In this way, she takes upon herself the sufferings of humanity. Inscribed in the cartouche is the phrase ‘Judge with justice, act with mercy and magnanimity’.
The third icon is linked to the story of the penance of Theophilus, the treasurer of a church. Whilst praying before an image of the Mother of God, he called her ‘Hope of Sinners’. The bust-length figure of the Mother of God and the position of the Infant Jesus are the main distinctive features of this icon. The Virgin’s hands form a circle around the figure of Jesus.
The final icon is entitled ‘She Who Seeks Out the Lost’.
