Description
YOSHIRO TANIGUCHI (1904-1979) High lamp in chromed metal, with a slab of black marble at the base, framed by double vertical uprights topped by a wooden grating, lantern shade in stretched tissue paper, embossed with a plant motif. Circa 1960 (Holes, stains, wear) Height 100 cm - Width 34 cm - Depth 30 cm A floor lamp in chromed metal, black marble base, wooden lattice, and stretched paper fabric (Holes, stains and wear) 39 3/8 x 13 3/8 x 11 3/4 in. HISTORY : This model was created for the Hotel Okura in Tokyo, a luxury establishment emblematic of the Japanese art of living, completed in 1962. The building was designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, Hideo Kosaka, Asahi Iwama, Hajime Shimizu and Kisaburo Ito. Among these architects, Yoshio Taniguchi also designed the Imperial Theatre, the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art and the Toyokan (Asian Art Museum) at the Tokyo National Museum, earning him recognition as one of Japan's most renowned architects. The lamp on display comes from the lobby of the Hotel Okura annex, opened in 1973. It is decorated with paper featuring the traditional 'hemp leaf' motif (asanoha-mon), in harmony with the kumiko latticework that tops the shoji screens in the main hall.
