Description: This table was designed for the dining room of the Oud House, built as part of the Weissenhof Estate. This complex forms part of the architectural programme initiated in 1927 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who was in charge of the project’s artistic direction. Built for an exhibition organised by the Deutscher Werkbund, the Weissenhof Estate brought together seventeen architects from five European countries, invited to design experimental dwellings illustrating the most advanced research in modern architecture. The aim was to demonstrate that a new form of architecture could meet the demands of contemporary life whilst remaining economically viable. The concepts of functionality, structural rationalisation, technical fittings and interior layout were central to this approach. With this in mind, the furniture was conceived as a natural extension of the architecture: no longer a mere decorative element, but an essential component of a coherent whole, where form and function harmonise with the modern ideal.
