Description
CAPRON Roger (1922–2006) – A large, oblong earthenware bowl decorated with a wading bird and a flower, fitted with a simple wicker handle. Length: 57 cm. This is model C37, produced between 1957 and 1965 in its largest size, as referenced in *Roger Capron Céramiste* by Pierre Staudenmeyer, Éditions Norma, p. 36. (Chips at the ends and stains). Note: After studying at the École nationale supérieure des Arts appliqués in Paris, Roger Capron settled in Vallauris in 1946, where, together with Robert Picault and Jean Derval, he helped found the Callis studio, a major player in the post-war revival of French ceramics. He opened his own studio in 1948 and quickly developed a personal style combining functional forms, stylised decoration and experimentation with mass production. The pieces from the 1950s and 1960s, including this C37 bowl, are among the iconic creations of his Vallauris period and contributed to the international recognition of post-war French ceramics.
