Description
AUGUSTE Robert (1922–1991) – Green-glazed earthenware jug. Signed ‘R Auguste’ and marked ‘Vallauris’ on the base. Height: 30 cm. (Glaze crack at the neck).Note: Robert Auguste (1922–1991) and Ginette Gausserand, known as Gyn Auguste (1932–2018), met at the Fontcarrade Professional School of Pottery in Montpellier, where they were trained in ceramic techniques. Settling in Vallauris in 1952, they founded the Atelier Auguste and played a part in the post-war revival of French ceramics alongside the generation of the great Vallauris workshops. After moving to Pouzilhac in the Gard, their work developed a distinctive style combining sculptural forms, glazing techniques and decorative freedom. Although they separated in the 1970s, they continued to work in the same studio, each developing their own body of work whilst preserving the identity of the Atelier Auguste.
