Description
JOLLY Marie-Madeleine (1914–1992) – A large earthenware vase with three necks, in shades of green accented with black, featuring a slightly raised decoration depicting motifs inspired by Breton iconography, comprising hearts and crosses reminiscent of the embroidery found on Breton costumes. Signed ‘MM Jolly’ on the base. Height: 42.5 cm. Note: Marie-Madeleine Jolly (1914–1992), née Marie-Madeleine François, was a French ceramicist who trained in drawing in Paris before going on to develop, alongside her husband Philippe Madeline (1914–2002), a significant ceramic design practice. In 1951, the couple founded the ‘Le Tryskel’ studio in Villefranche-sur-Mer – a name referring to Philippe’s Breton origins – before moving their operations to Locoal-Mendon (Morbihan) in Brittany from 1960 onwards. Their meeting with Jean Cocteau in 1957 marked a decisive turning point: until 1963, the Madeline-Jolly studio oversaw the production of more than 300 ceramic pieces as well as jewellery by the artist, some of which were produced in limited editions under their supervision.
