LAGET Étienne (1896 – ?) & HENRIOT Quimper (manufacturer) – Neo-Greek-style earthenware crater vase with two handles, the red clay featuring a translucent glaze and a black decoration depicting a circle of dancing Arlésiennes. Signed and marked ‘Et. Laget’, ‘JH’ and ‘Faïence Folklorique’. Design reproduced in *L’Encyclopédie des céramiques de Quimper* by Philippe Théallet and Bernard Jules Verlingues, pp. 476–477. Height: 25 cm. (Two chips beneath the base).
Note: Étienne Laget (born in 1896) was an artist and decorator who collaborated with the Henriot factory in Quimper on a range of ceramics inspired mainly by Provence, Arles and the Camargue. His works bear various signatures; the word ‘Henriot’ may be absent, replaced by the monogram ‘JH’ or the mark ‘Faïence Folklorique’. A pupil of Léo Lelée, he developed a style deeply rooted in regional traditions and southern folklore. His works were often sold through his shop in Arles, prioritising his identity as an artist over that of the manufacturer. He is also known as an illustrator and creator of folk art objects.
