PORSON Henriette (1874–1963) – Nativity. A terracotta sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary kneeling in prayer before the Baby Jesus lying in a manger, adorned with the radiant Star of Bethlehem. Signed ‘H. Porson’ on the plinth. Height: 19.5 cm; plinth: 20 x 18.5 cm. (Part of the top of the Child’s head is missing, a corner of the plinth is missing, and there is significant wear to the patina and other areas of damage.) Note: Henriette Porson studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, then at the Académie Julian in Paris, where she attended the studios of Jean-Paul Laurens and Henri Royer. She exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in the early 20th century and, around 1930, collaborated with the HB factory in Quimper, which produced several of her sculptures. After the Second World War, her work turned notably towards religious subjects, particularly at the 1947 Exhibition of Sacred Art in Nantes.
