Terracotta painter’s palette, carved in bas-relief, depicting a languid naiad amongst vegetation, in the Art Nouveau style, based on the bronze by Félix Charpentier (1858–1924).
Signed and marked on the reverse: ‘H. Thomas / Moulins-Engilbert’
H.: 39 cm – W.: 30 cm.
Small hanging holes in the rim and at the top of the reverse, suggesting the work was intended to be displayed vertically.
‘The Thomas family of Moulins-Engilbert: a distinguished family of potters. There were five members of the Thomas family working at the La Montagne pottery (Saint-Honoré-les-Bains). Philippe (…) decided to set up his own business in Moulins-Engilbert, at a place known as ‘le Pont-Cottion’, in 1864. Four generations would go on to produce ceramics in this village between 1864 and 1981 (…). Philippe Thomas was succeeded by Aristide, Henri and Jean…’ (in ‘Vents du Morvan’, ‘Le travail de l’argile à Moulins-Engilbert’, by Serge Bernard).
