Description
Claude VARLAN (1940-2021):
Large stoneware ball vase with abstract painted decoration.
H : 58 cm. D : 55 cm
Provenance :
- Galerie Capazza, Nançay (18)
- private collection from the Loire Valley
Note: Claude Varlan attended the Ecole des Métiers d'Art in Paris, then worked in various workshops, including André Normand's in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, Palley's and Coville's later on.
In 1974, with Brigitte Pénicaud, he moved to Chaillac, then Les Places, in northern Limousin. He hasn't had a workshop since around 2000.
A jar-maker par excellence, he is above all a painter. First in a Japanese style, then in all sorts of ways, always surprising, most often admirable, he covers the round surfaces of his jars with engobes and enamels. Under the appearance of total improvisation, his painting reveals a mastery that is entirely his own. Source : https://ceramiques-contemporaines-sevres.fr/
