Description
Michel GARDELLE (1949-2025). Wheeled box imitating a car, in stoneware, pebbles and metal. Signed. H. 29cm. Provenance: Denis Goudenhooft collection Bibliography: GOUDENHOOFT, Denis. Stoneware Potters. Seals and signatures from 1941 to 1985. Éditions Complément d'Objet, Martot, 2010, reproduced on page 62. Michel Gardelle had two solo exhibitions at the Complément d'Objet gallery in Rouen in 1990 and 1992. But before that, Michel and Denis had spent many evenings at the potters' markets they both attended, remaking the world... "Gardelle is a potter, of course, but the body of his pots is painted, the "decoration" to use this rather absurd term. It's a painting in keeping with his initial approach, frank, subtly elementary, powerful. She brings a new sign to pottery; her filiations come from Africa, from the new expressionist painting, from art brut, that's how much her work is rooted in a topicality still unfamiliar to potters". (Robert Deblander). Portrait photo by Jean-Marie Tinarrage, in catalogue of the exhibition "Michel Gardelle. Céramiques / Peintures", Musée Despiau-Wlérick, Mont-de-Marsan, 1991.
