HISTORY :
This set of tiles is part of Marjolaine and Luc Lanel's research into decorative ceramics integrated into architecture, a characteristic of their post-war production. It was presented in June 1947 in Paris, at the exhibition "Un moment d'art décoratif contemporain", organised by Jules Leleu in his town house on avenue Franklin-Roosevelt. For the dining room designed by Leleu, the Lanels created a major décor of friezes and polychrome ceramic panels framing and emphasising the doors, in close dialogue with the interior architecture. The extent of the plant motifs, the richness of the glazes and the way it is integrated into the décor make this one of the first fully developed examples of the architectural ceramics developed by the couple during this period. The originality of this work was noticed by Madame Vincent Auriol, who decided, following the exhibition, to entrust the Lanel couple with part of the decoration of the dining room at the Élysée Palace. The decor presented here thus appears to be the model and starting point for the prestigious Élysée building site, which has now disappeared and is known only through period photographs.
