Group of turtles, netsuke in vegetable ivory (morphil), Japan, 19th–20th centuries, signed 忠一 (Tadakazu), inlaid eyes, height 6 cm
Provenance: the collection of Edward T. Chow (Qiu Yanzhi, 仇焱之, 1910–1980), which has remained in the family to this day. Edward T. Chow was one of the most important collectors and dealers in Chinese art of the 20th century, particularly renowned for his collection of ceramics. Based in Geneva from 1967 onwards, he built up a collection that has become a benchmark in the field of Chinese art.
