Marie Laurencin (1883–1956), Portrait of a Woman, 1940, graphite and coloured pencil on paper, signed and dated, 16×12 cm Provenance: Albert Flament, Paris, (acquired directly from the artist), Lucien Nouvel Collection, 1956, (inherited from the previous owner), and has remained in the family ever since The work is mounted on cardboard Shows signs of oxidation Albert Flament Collection (1877–1956) Three works by Marie Laurencin (1883–1956) These works belonged to the collection of Albert Flament (1877–1956), a writer, art critic and Officer of the Legion of Honour. He was close to many artistic figures of his time, including Anna de Noailles (aunt of Viscount Charles de Noailles), Colette and Marie Laurencin. He developed a literary relationship with the latter which blossomed into a friendship. Their correspondence bears witness to their deep bond: the artist called him ‘my dear Albert’ and, in a letter from 1934, wrote to him that ‘even the briefest quarter-hour tête-à-tête with you would give me greater pleasure than elegant but empty social gatherings’. Naturally, he acquired several of her works (lots 2244 to 2246). A keen collector, Albert Flament owned major works by 19th- and 20th-century French artists such as Renoir, Delacroix, Utrillo and Boudin. In his later years, he became close to Lucien Nouvel, a prominent industrialist and property developer, and entered into an agreement to bequeath his collection to him in return for a life annuity. Lucien Nouvel welcomed Flament and his collection into his villa ‘L’Altayr’, a gesture that particularly moved the writer: ‘ I have failed to express to you my deepest gratitude for kindly placing at my disposal, for the rest of my life, all of these objects, which are, to me, my dearest friends’ (AF, will, 1956). On his death in 1956, the collection was passed on, in accordance with his wishes, to Lucien Nouvel and then to his descendants.
