Francis Picabia (1879–1953), *Costume for a Warrior*, watercolour and graphite pencil on paper, signed, 24 × 18.5 cm Provenance: Serge Lifar Collection, estate of the Countess Ahlefeldt (acquired directly from the artist), Hôtel des Ventes, Geneva, 13 March 2012, lot 609, private collection, Switzerland (acquired from the previous owner) Note: This work has not been submitted to the Picabia Committee and is sold as such without a certificate of authenticity issued by the Committee Like Natalia Goncharova, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Picabia is one of many artists drawn to the world of dance. From the personal collection of the dancer Serge Lifar, *Costume for a Warrior* bears witness to the close ties between visual artists and this leading figure in the world of dance. It is a costume study. Although it is not associated with any stage production, this drawing illustrates the artist’s fruitful dialogue with the world of the stage. *Costume for a Warrior* incorporates the motif from *L’Oeil cacodylate*, a major Dadaist work created by the artist in 1921. This iconographic motif has its origins in a biographical episode: an eye infection treated with sodium cacodylate, which forced Picabia into isolation and which he used as the starting point for a therapeutic and creative process. Reused in several later compositions, this motif appears here as part of a figurative study of costume, linking Picabia’s Dadaist vocabulary to graphic projects in the world of the performing arts
