Description
MINTON – 19th century Spice dish, c. 1860 An oblong dish in glazed earthenware with five compartments, including a large central one, decorated in polychrome in the style of Bernard Palissy’s followers with four Olympian deities: Mercury, Ceres, Juno and Neptune, on a blue background. Incised ‘MINTON’ mark on the underside. Various incised numbers on the underside. 36.5 x 31 cm (One chip). This dish is inspired by 16th- and 17th-century French earthenware, particularly the works of Bernard Palissy’s followers and, notably, the pieces from the Pré-d’Auge region. It is thus fully in keeping with Minton’s productions from around 1850 to 1880. The piece presented here can therefore be compared with the ‘Oval dish: recesses and four genies in relief’ by the ‘ochre-footed’ Master of Pré-d’Auge, held at the Louvre Museum, from which it was probably directly inspired (RMN, Louvre Museum, inv. no. OA1375).
